CARING FOR THE CAREGIVERS: EXAMINING BURNOUT AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE AMONG HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
Abstract
Background: Work-life balance involves creating and maintaining a supportive and healthy ork environment so that employees can maintain a balance between work and personal responsibilities. The struggle to achieve the fine balance between personal and professional commitments often leads to stress in the employees’ life.
Objectives: To explore factors and stressors associated with burnout at workplace. And to find out the relationship between work life balance (WLB) and burnout.
Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted on healthcare professionals of one of the tertiary care hospitals and affiliated medical college. Convenient sampling method was used and all the healthcare professionals enrolled during the study period were included in the study. Burnout and work life balance were assessed in the study.
Results: A statistically significant association was observed between all three sub-dimensions of Work-Life Balance (WLB) and two sub-dimensions of burnout, namely emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation.
Conclusion: Feeling of burnout symptoms among health care professionals may bring about work-life imbalance and vice versa. The inability to balance between personal or family life and work life among health care professionals is mostly responsible for exhaustion.
