THE SYMBOLIC AND METAPHORICAL STYLE OF MODERN URDU SHORT STORY

Abstract

Modern Urdu Short story is significantly different from traditional fiction in terms of its themes, style of expression and artistic experiments. In the modern era, human life has become complex, fragmented and uncertain. Industrial development, scientific inventions, political conflicts, wars, migration, civilizational decline, social inequality and existential crisis have deeply affected the inner world of man. It was not possible to present these complex situations and events in a direct and simple narrative, so modern Urdu fiction writers made the symbolic and metaphorical style an effective means of expression. This style, instead of limiting the fiction to a mere sequence of events, gave it intellectual, philosophical and psychological depth.                                                                                                                                             

The symbolic style refers to a style of expression in which a character, object, scene, event or environment is used in a broader and deeper sense, going beyond its apparent meaning. Similarly, in the metaphorical style, one reality is presented in the context of another reality so that beauty, meaning and breadth are created in the expression. Modern fiction writers have mastered both these styles so well that every character, every scene and every event in their fiction has an inner and symbolic meaning along with its outward appearance. This is why the study of modern fiction is not just a process of reading a story but also a journey to access its hidden meanings and layered understandings.                                                                             

The main purpose of using symbols in modern Urdu Short story is to present themes such as human existence, inner anguish, loneliness, fear, meaninglessness, identity crisis, social chaos, cultural defeat and spiritual emptiness in a more effective way. Fiction writers often use objects such as deserted streets, deserted paths, darkness, closed doors, forest, birds, water, fire, fog, travel, ruins, mirrors and dreams as symbols. These symbols do not only reflect the external environment but also interpret the inner state of man, psychological conflict and collective consciousness. In this way, the reader is forced to find the hidden meaning behind each symbol, which adds to the intellectual depth of the story.                                                                         

Mansha Yad, Anwar Sajjad, Khalida Hussain, Mirza Hamid Baig,, Asad Muhammad Khan and other modern fiction writers used symbolic and metaphorical styles very successfully.
