ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN EDUCATION AND SOCIAL MEDIA: PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACTS, LEGAL CHALLENGES, AND ETHICAL GOVERNANCE IN THE DIGITAL LEARNING ERA

Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized the education sector and social media landscape, reshaping the educational landscape, the way of teaching and learning, communication and knowledge creation. Personalized learning, increased accessibility, and digital engagement have been improved by AI-powered education systems, adaptive learning, and algorithmic social media environments. However, alongside the technological advancements, concerns are also raised regarding the psychological well-being of students, algorithmic bias, privacy of data, digital surveillance, academic integrity, misinformation and the effectiveness of existing legal and ethical frameworks (UNESCO, 2021; Holmes et al., 2022). While there has been a growing interdisciplinary research, there are limited, if any, qualitative studies focused on the multi-disciplinary nature of psychological impacts, legal concerns and ethical governance in AI-supported learning and social media platforms.
The purpose of this study is to investigate these interrelated dimensions, through the interpretivist qualitative research design, which is based on socio-technical systems theory and responsible AI governance. Qualitative document analysis and thematic analysis were used to evaluate peer-reviewed literature, international policy documents, legal instruments and institutional reports to identify emerging debates and challenges for governance (Braun & Clarke, 2021; Creswell & Poth, 2018).
The themes that arose from the analysis were: Transforming learning with AI-driven personalization and intelligent educational technologies; Psychological implications of algorithmic engagement, such as cognitive overload, digital dependency, mental well-being; Ongoing legal and ethical issues, including privacy, transparency, accountability, intellectual property, algorithmic fairness; and need for comprehensive, human-centered governance frameworks that balance the opportunities of technology with the values of education, human rights, and responsible AI deployment. The findings indicate that the integration of AI into education is a multifaceted process that requires the active participation of various stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, technology developers, legal frameworks, and regulatory bodies, to establish sustainable and fair learning environments for digital learning.
The research brings together psychological, legal, ethical and governance perspectives in one qualitative research approach, contributing to the increasing stream of studies on the application of AI in education. The findings provide insights and information that will help shape the ways education organizations, educational policy makers, and technology suppliers create responsible governance frameworks for the protection of learners' wellbeing, academic integrity and digital rights in the new digital learning environment.
