HISTORICIZING THE BRAVERY OF RAI AHMAD KHAN KHARRAL: FOLKLORE, COLLECTIVE MEMORY AND ANTI-COLONIAL RESISTANCE IN COLONIAL PUNJAB

Abstract

The 1857 uprising has been studied traditionally from the perspective of the northern and central region of India and several important centers like Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Delhi etc. Comparatively, the scholarly focus has been less on the resistance movements that developed within colonial Punjab, the significance of which lies in their ability to provide a good illustration of localized forms of anti-colonial mobilization. One of the more significant figures of resistance in Punjab was the tribal chief of the Kharral tribe, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharral (c. 1776–1857), who is remembered in official British documents, regional history and Punjabi folklore. Colonial authorities often depicted Kharral as a renegade tribal chief who was threatening imperial stability and peace, but local histories have retained him as a brave hero who stood firm against the colonial establishment for the cause of local autonomy, justice, and communal honor. The differing representations show that there is a complex relationship between historical documentation, folklore and collective memory. This study historicizes the courage of Rai Ahmad Khan Kharral by exploring the entanglements of oral history, folklore and colonial archives as well as contemporary historical writing. The study reviews the theories of collective memory, oral history and Subaltern Studies and assesses the processes of the construction, transmission and institutionalization of a heroic narrative across generations. Study claims folklore should not be viewed solely as legend, but as a useful historical source if carefully examined in conjunction with archival sources.
